Handbags – The Most Popular Accessory

Next to shoes, the items that women are most likely to purchase with an almost alarming zeal are handbags. Taking a look at the history of the handbag as a luxury item and what it can mean to a woman, however, it becomes clear that this is not just a frivolous purchase. Simply as a practical item to have, the handbag clearly is an important purchase from time to time. Most people, men and women alike, need some sort of receptacle for the items that they will need throughout the day. This includes very basic items such as a wallet and keys, which fit nicely in a dainty purse.

Traditionally speaking, designer handbags are one of the first status items that those in the middle class were able to afford in the 1950’s. This began their immense rise to popularity. Though their sales diminished in the over-materialistic 1980’s, in which buying a thousand-dollar handbag seemed to be rather ridiculous, they have jumped back on the radar as a stylish and acceptable accessory to have. With so many different designers to choose from nowadays, it seems that there is a brand and a fit for everyone’s personal style.

These handbags don’t need to break the bank. There are some brands that offer luxurious tote bags or purses that aren’t quite as pricey, and many people are now turning to the purchase of vintage or gently used bags. Although some consumers are simply looking for a designer logo splashed all over their bag as a way of showing off their status and wealth, the more recent trend has been towards a more elegant and timeless look. The appeal is in the quality of a designer handbag, rather than the status that it affords.

There are, however, still ways to make a bold statement with handbags, including the recent trends towards bright and bold colors and decorative accents. Fashion in the new century has been all about playing around with tradition. There is a more modern edge to the handbag as a result, seen across the board from extremely traditional fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton to the younger superstar designers such as Marc Jacobs. With both now working in collaboration, this is a clear indication that fashion has moved forward to a more youthful direction.  The handbag will continue to be an accessory that everyone is happy to both give and receive, showing off both practicality and tradition.
